This post is intended to actually teach a valuable lesson not only in internet marketing but in offline businesses as well. People want to make a lot of money, yes, that is a fact. But there are also people who want to make too much — people who are greedy, people whose minds were poisoned by avarice.

Here’s some piece of knowledge that all of us can use in this very competitive and business-minded world: “You can make some money, a lot of money, or no money at all. But you can NEVER make too much.”

Let me share a modified excerpt from Geoffrey Chaucer’s Pardoner’s Tale to further elaborate my point.

A Story About Greed: Proof that One Can’t Make Too Much

There were three rioters who learned that a figure called “Death” has killed one of their companions. Agitated, they started to search for the figure and kill him in order to avenge for their lost friend. While they were traveling, they met an old man on the road. This old man asked them why they’re on a journey, and they told him their purpose.

“Ah, Death? I know where he is! Just go to that shady area over there and you’ll find him,” the old man uttered.

The three men rushed to the place where they found a big tree and a big lump of gold under it. They wanted to get it and take it home, but couldn’t because it was daytime and if people see them, they would be regarded as thieves.

So, they decided to stay under the tree for a few hours and return home once the sun sets. The youngest of them was tasked to go back to town to get some bread and wine.

While youngest rioter was out, the other two plotted against him. They decided to kill him the moment he returns so that only the two of them would share the gold — more gold for each one then!

Simultaneously, the youngest one was planning as well. He wanted to get the gold all for himself so he bought some poison from the nearest shop and placed a few on the wine that he bought for his companions.

The moment he returned, the other two stabbed him and he lost his life. They decided to celebrate by drinking wine, but unfortunately they both got the poisonous wine. After a few minutes, all of them were lying dead.

As you can see, the three rioters were about to get rich already. They were going to make a lot! But because greed overpowered each of them, they planned to kill each other to have much gold. In the end, all of them died and they lost the gold — and their lives.

It’s Better to Make a Decent Amount than to Make Nothing at All

Being greedy and thinking only of ourselves may sound great mainly because we’re the only ones gaining, and we’re gaining a lot. When you think about it, being greedy can actually kill us (or our businesses). Let me give a business-oriented example. Don’t worry, it won’t be as long as the tale.

Let’s say a person offers an article marketing service. He charges $500 for an article to be submitted to 50 sites. Do you think anyone would hire him? I don’t. He’s simply being selfish and wants to make just too much! Instead of earning even $50, he earns nothing because no one avails of his services.

So you see, a person can truly make a few bucks, a lot of money, or absolutely nothing — but one thing’s for sure, he can never make TOO much.

I am eager to know your insights about this. Do you agree, or do you reckon one must do anything just to earn too much money? Any other thoughts? Let me know!

Nice story. :) This post is truly an eye-opener; it just succumbs me to see that other people offer “easy-to-do services” for $xxx or so. It’s either they want to fool people by making them think it’s worth the money, or they want to make too much money. Either way it all boils down to greed, eh?

Maybe we humans become greedy when it comes to money, but I’m pretty sure none of us would plan to kill or destroy others blogs for our gain. :D

I think when people make too much it just gets them into trouble anyways. They always want more which can happen but the greed overwhelms their focus and hey just collapse in most cases
